My take on an English translation of the original lyrics derived from a 1672? French comedy in five acts.

Basically Ed loves Mary but Mary loves Tom

So Ed writes letters purportedly from Tom to Patricia declaring his love for her.

Ed later suffers horrors of regret, goes mad, and runs away.

Later still. Ed regains sanity, returns to town, apologizes to Tom and Mary, who are now wed.

Then Ed marries Tom’s sister.
